The Piece
Ceramic Sculpture
A knit porcelain pouch with an open lacework body and a deep gathered ruffle at the mouth. Knitted by hand in yarn, saturated in liquid porcelain and fired, so the yarn burns away in the early part of the firing and only the porcelain that soaked into it is left standing. Every stitch and loop where the needles left it. Decorative only, not functional ware.

Michi is my childhood nickname- you may know me as Michelle Herringer. Learn more about me at michipottery.com My functional work is intended to add a touch of special to the daily routine; a bridge between life and art - objects that carry both creative beauty and utility. On the other side of functional lies my work known as 'knit porcelain'. Here I start with something soft and pliable - yarn- and transform it into something sculptural.
